5 Scriptures to Fight Fear
Fear is a very really challenge that many mothers face especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. Between concerns about baby’s growth, your own body, the situations surrounding your pregnancy, the father of your child, your parents, your in-laws… the list goes on and on. Too often the list of what-ifs and why-nots and how-will-I grows into a steadily overwhelming fear.
Firstly, Mama, you are not alone. Often times, just opening up and talking to a trusted friend, family member or counsellor will help relieve stress and encourage you to bravely and honestly face your fear, dissect it and deal with the root cause.
Secondly, I’ve put together a list of the top 5 Scriptures to help you fight fear. These are Scriptures that I used myself and spoke and prayed over and over again until I defeated the fear I faced. These are for you.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. AMP
When you feel pressed to fear, remember that God has given you a spirit of power; that is boldness, that is strength. Of love and of a sound mind. Fear loves to get into your head, doesn’t it? It just picks a spot and aims to set up camp. But when you stand in the strength of joy and peace that God gives, you can confidently kick fear out. Because God has clearly given you that right as per the Scripture above. You have a right to be a powerful, loving mother who has a sound mind. Don’t allow fear to take away your rights!
Philippians 4:8
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise… Then the God of peace will be with you. NLT
Uhm… Alarica? This verse does not have the word ‘fear’ in it… Don’t worry, I know! But this verse is super important anyway because it gives us the formula to maintaining peace. And when you are in a peaceful state, fear is so out of mind it seems like a weak joke.
Here is the secret: fix your thoughts. That means think continually, always, consistently on the following: whatever is true, honest, right, wholesome, lovely, worthy of admiration, excellent, praiseworthy. If you keep your mind focused on the above list, fear won’t be able to find any entrance to creep in. A mind grounded on these good attributes is a hostile environment to fear.
Exodus 14:13-14
Then Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid! Take your stand [be firm and confident and undismayed] and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for those Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you… AMP
Mama, you do not need to be afraid. Fighting fear means that you take your stand against it and refuse to be moved into believing the lies that fear throws against your mind. And just in case you think you’re standing alone, you’re not. God is standing with you. Not only is he standing with you, he is fighting for you. Talk about a confidence boost!
Mark 6:50
Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, you’re God, is with you every step you take. MSG
How do you fight fear? By walking in courage and strength. Fear wants you to feel weak and to quit believing that all will go well with you and your baby. Fear wants you to give in to every bad report, every negative statistic and every bad piece of news that could influence your pregnancy. Mama, you don’t have to give in. Take strength in God. Take courage. Pregnancy is not easy and neither is motherhood, but it is worth every challenge because you become stronger. You become fearless.
And God is with you every step you take on this journey. On the days when you are running; on the days when you are crawling, he is with you still.
Matthew 6:34
Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. MSG
So much of fear boils down to the habit of worrying about what might happen tomorrow, or next week, or in 9 months. Girl, you don’t have to worry. Actually, Jesus said the above verse expecting us to take him seriously. Like, don’t worry. Period. Worrying doesn’t actually do anything because worry is amped up by fear, so whatever it is causing you to lose sleep is very likely to not even happen or not even happen the way you think it will.
Give your attention to the miracle that God is doing in you right now; the putting together of organs and muscle and tissue, mind, memory, cognitive ability. He is creating a little person in you right now. Focus on his handiwork and the wonder of it all. Don’t sweat the details about tomorrow. The same God that is with you today, giving you strength and encouraging you and loving you, is the same God who will be with you tomorrow. He has a solution for every problem and the answer for every question. He will take care of you and your baby. So you don’t need to worry.
So glad you stopped by today and I hope that you’ve found support and encouragement here. Comment below and let me know what you think about the list and other verses that you think should be added.
Lots of love sent your way!
